Behind the design: The story of Jon Dyball
The heart of Obi is designer Jon Dyball, whose path to fashion began in the rural Bay of Plenty. While other children played soccer, Jon was busy learning the fundamentals of tailoring, cutting, and patternmaking from his grandmother. To this day, he still uses her original sewing machine to develop his collections, infusing every Obi piece with a rich sense of personal heritage.

Driven by a passion for the apparel industry, Jon moved from Rotorua to Auckland at just 16 years old. He honed his skills under the mentorship of Susan at a Ponsonby Road boutique, and by age 17, he was already patternmaking custom evening wear and bridal gowns for private clients. Jon later spent 11 years mastering precision tailoring and premium fabrics at Working Style Menswear, building an impeccable technical foundation.

From menswear tailoring to contemporary womenswear
Seeking more artistic freedom than traditional menswear allowed, Jon transitioned into women’s apparel and established the Obi label. Today, Obi represents a masterclass in garment construction. While Jon travels internationally to source creative inspiration and luxury materials, the heart of the business remains close to home.
